Ancient Ruins Civilization of Bangladesh - Mainamati, Comilla

It's a historic place at Comilla District and called home of ancient Buddhist civilization. According to archaeologists, the ruins can be seen now in Mainamati, it is actually the remains of Buddhist Bihar of ancient city Jayakarmantabasaka. Legendary name of the hilly area was Devaparbata. Some archaeological settlements at Mainamati are the Palace of queen Mainamati, Shalbon Bihar, Kotila Mura, Itakhola Mura, Rupban Mura, Charpatra Mura etc. Current names came from name of famous Queen Mainamati, mother of the Gobinda Chandra.

From the capital Dhaka distance of Comilla is 96 km and Mainamati is 90 km. From Saydabad bus stand of Dhaka, various service bus are left to Comilla, such as Tisha, Asia Line Trasport. You may drop to Mainamati Cantonment bus stops on the way of Comilla. It takes two hours to go from Dhaka. You may also go to Comilla by train, it may take around 5 hours. From Kandirpar of Comilla by CNG auto rickshaw you can reach at Kotbari or Mainamati.
Shalban Bihar, Mainamati, Comilla
You may start your tour from Rani Kutir which is the palace of queen Mainamati. It located on the small hill Beside Saheb Bazaar, which is situated around 2 km north of the Mainamati bus stand.

Another visiting place is War cemeteries near Rani Kutir, back to Mainamati bus stand the west side of the street will see the graveyard of the 2nd World War. It is one of the three War cemeteries of Bangladesh. You may spend few times in the nice place.

From here go to Cantonment bus stops and take auto rickshaw or cantonment bus to go Kotbari. Mainamati Kotbari area was the urban civilization of ancient Bengal. At the west of BARD (Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development) office there are two ancient ruin convents, one name is Itakhula Mura and another is Rupban Mura.

From here go to Shalban Bihar which bigger Buddhist convent at Mainamati. Buddhist king Bhabadeva build the convents in 700 CE. Still, now near the place exist a hilly forest area. Archaeological relics which are obtained by excavation, are preserved in the nearby museum. The museum is open 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, it is closed Saturday and government holy day.

After that you may visit Lalmai hill. It located south of Kotbari. It may take around 1 hour by auto rickshaw. Specialty of the hill is red colored soil. There is a Hindu temple of Goddess Chandi on the top of the Chandimura hill. Chandimura is the most south hill of the Lalmai hill range. This temple is built by Buddhist Queen Provabati in 700 CE.

Another old temple situated at Jagannathpur, which is located at 2 km east of Comilla town. This temple is built by Rada Kishur Manikya Bahadur, who was the king of Tripura in the 16th Century. Now ISCKON managed the temple.
