Historical and Visiting Places in Dhaka City

Mega city Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. In the Mughal and Pakistan period Dhaka was the capital of Bengal. There are many historical monuments spread throughout Dhaka. Few common visiting places in Dhaka Ahasan Manjil, Lalbagh Fort, National Martyrs Memorial, Suhrawardy Udyan, Bangabandu Museum etc.

Lalbagh Fort:

It is an incomplete fort of Mughal period. In 1678 AD Mughal Subedar Muhammad Azam Shah started to build a fort for Subedar of Bengal. Aurangabad fort is named after his father, Emperor Aurangzeb. But he was due to go to Delhi, the construction work is stopped. Later Subedar Shayesta khan in 1684 restarted construction of the fort, but for his daughter's death the construction work stopped again. Azam Shah was to be married to the Shayesta Khan's daughter Pari Bibi. In the middle of the fort have tomb of Pari Bibi. The fort is open for visitors from 10am to 5pm and closed on Sunday.

The Central Shaheed Minar: It is a national monument of Bangladesh, is located beside the Dhaka Medical College at Shahbagh in Dhaka. It is the symbol of Native language rights. In 1952, who gave to sacrifice life to demanding the mother tongue Bengal by Pakistani police forces,  the monument was built to memory of these language soldiers.

Suhrawardy Udyan: Its name was Race Course Ground in British period. It is a national memorial location for Bangladesh. On March 7 of 1971, bengali nationalist leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made the historic speech in here. December 16, 1971 Pakistan Army leader Lt. Gen. AAK Niazi surrendered here after their defeat in the Bangladesh Liberation War.

National Martyrs Memorial: It is located at Nabinagar of Savar in Dhaka. Bangladesh is one of the few countries in the world to gain independence through a war of liberation. The nine month long war was fought by the brave souls of the soil. Victory was finally achieved on the 16th of December 1971 at the cost of almost 3 million lives and damage caused to property. This monument was built in honor the memory of martyrdom.

Martyred Intellectual Memorial: It is situated on Rayer Bazar of Dhanmondi in Dhaka. It is also known as Badhya Bhumi Monument. In 1971, Pakistan army killed many general public of Bangladesh in here. This monument was built to commemorate of the killed martyr.

Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban: It is the National Parliament of Bangladesh, situated on Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at Dhaka. There are a lake named Crescent lake and a nice park named Chandrima Udyan, near of parliament.

National Museum: There are many museums in Dhaka city; these are- National Museum located on Shahbag, Bangabandu Memorial Museum situated at road 32 Dhanmondi, Ahsan Manjil Museum at Sadarghat, Science Museum at Agargaon, Muktijuddha Museum stands on Segunbagicha.

Dhaka Zoological Park: It is located at Mirpur in Dhaka. There is many animals and birds in the zoo. It is very favorite place for kids. There is an animal museum inside the zoo. There is arrangement for adults to catch fish and for children to ride on an elephant and horse. Ticket price 10 taka, visiting hours 9am to 5pm, it is close on Sunday.

Novotheater:
Novo Theater, Dhaka
It is a simulation planetarium theater located on Bijoy Sarani of Dhaka. Shows are displayed 4 times in a day at 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and the time schedule for Friday at 10am, 3pm, 5pm, 7pm. It is closed on Wednesday. Ticket price 50 taka and usually starts selling before 2 hours.

Bangabandhu Safari Park: It is located on Gazipur beside on Dhaka-Mymensingh road. From Mahakhali of Dhaka you can go by bus of Mymensing, and you have to drop-out to Bagher Bazar. Distance of Bagher Bazar from Dhaka city around 45 km and fare for bus 50-80 taka. From here, by CNG auto rickshaw you can reach at Safari Park. Fare for CNG only 15 taka per person. It is open for visiting 8am to 5pm, entry fee at park 50 taka. There are two restaurants in the parks, from where you can take lunch.

Bhawal National Park: It is located in Sreepur upazila in Gazipur district and approximately 40 km north of Dhaka city. It is a woodland of nearly 5000 hectare area. There are many different species of plants and animals in the forest. Here are a few picnic spots. It is a attractive tourist spot.
