Sonargaon and Panam City - Earliest Capital of Bengal

It was the capital of the earliest Bengal, known as golden village. It was under the Deva Dynasty up to the 13th century. In the 16th century of the period of Isakha, it was the capital and business center of Bengal.

You'll see here a folk art museum, palace of prince Isakha, Jamdani Polli, different type of boat, Litchi garden etc. There is a void old city known as Panama City; it is only 10 minutes away from foundation gate.
Sonargaon is located at 26 km east of Dhaka. You can go there by bus from Gulistan of Dhaka; its may take around 1 hour to reach. There is a small restaurant beside folk art museum, from where you can get lunch.

Panam City: 

Another tourist attraction at Sonargaon is the ruin city Panam. It was the famous city of ancient Bengal. Persian word Panam means residence. It situated north of Sonargaon Folk Art and Craft Museum.
It was the International business city, but today no one lived here. In the city still remains 52 buildings, these are used for business, office, living house, prayer room, exhibition auditorium, dance room, court, museum, mint etc. The whole city is surrounded by artificial canals, those were dug to protect the city. In the west side there was only one bridge to enter the city. Ruins buildings boast architecture of the Sultanate, Mughal, and colonial periods. These fancy art structural housings reminds the glorious past of Panam.
In 2006, Panam was listed by World monument fund in the list of World 100 ruined cities. By the 14th century Sonargaon became a commercial port. Famous traveler Ibn Batuta, Ralph Fitch, Ma Huan mentioned trade activities of Sonargaon. Many ships came here from various countries. Muslin cloth was produced in this region. Panam was the international special market for muslin.
After death of Isakha, Mugal empire shifted the capital of Bengal from Sonargaon to Jahangirnar (Dhaka). As a result, Sonargaon is gradually losing importance.

In the last of the 19th century, business of cotton and other cloths were developed based on the Panam city. In the beginning of the 20th CE, many rich Hindu businessmen build their house for residence. In the time of India-Pakistan war in 1965, Hindu businessmen started to leave, and the city was deserted. Neglect and absence of the citizen, destroy these houses and creates this haunted city.
Once upon a time, the city was filled with the noise of the merchants at home and abroad, would wiggle dance rhythm, today there is only silence, Lonely dilapidated buildings looked steadfastly gazing at a passer-by.
